The Living Gallery

The Living Gallery is a new space dedicated to the artistic exploration of the question of aliveness. The exhibitions and actions displayed in the gallery will grow out of the questions: What is living art? In what way can artistic action bring life to a space, time, person, or even an object? What interactions does art have with life? What life can it sustain in inanimate objects—or even in the dead?

The Living Gallery will operate annually from June to October as an educational gallery of the School of Visual Theater in Jerusalem, and will be curated by Hila Cohen-Schneiderman. As part of a school that teaches performance art in close connection with the visual arts, the gallery will explore the possibilities of the shared existence of these two fields in a non-hierarchical manner. The gallery space itself will be conceived as a space of active imagination: a space that immediately affects those who enter it, accumulating the intentions, actions, and presences within it—both from the public and the artistic works and interventions that will reshape it throughout its period of activity.
