Jerusalem Poems / Paul Celan

Paul Celan composed the “Jerusalem” poem cycle after his only visit to Israel, a few months before he took his own life in the River Seine. It is an idiosyncratic journey beyond the contradictions and gaps that divide Jerusalem – a place filled with danger, an object of deadly passion. Celan, born in Chernivtsi, a Holocaust survivor who lost his parents, wrote in German in Paris, and is considered one of the greatest German poets of the twentieth century. We will read together his poetry and allow its mysteries of language to transform our consciousness, a “breathturn” in his own words.

The workshop is intended for art students.
