True Time: First Chapter

In mid-September, the theatrical exhibition “True Time” will open at the gallery, featuring the artists Yael Bartana, Dori Cohen Forster and Omer Shizaf, curated by Ana Wild. Shani Kagan will appear in the role of gallery guard.

From the moment the exhibition opens until it closes, the works in it evolve; like a television series whose plot develops from week to week, each of the works on display has three chapters — meaning they live and change over the course of the exhibition. The first chapter will open on September 17 and will be shown for a week and a half. The visit to the exhibition is a performance: the gallery guard will lead visitors on a tour among the works in their first, initial form.

Omer Sheizaf presents “The Invisible Man Remembers”: Dani-din, the boy from the book series by On Sarig takes stock of his life. Still seeing-yet-unseen, Dani-din is bodiless — he is the theatrical effect that brings back to life the traumas of his youth. In the first chapter, “Ruti,” he remembers a scene where desire could not be fulfilled without a body.

Yael Bartana‘s trilogy “And Europe Will Be Stunned…” was created nearly twenty years ago, yet it still resonates loudly in the present. In the trilogy’s first chapter, “Mary Koszmary (Nightmares)” (2007), the figure of Sławomir Sierakowski, leader of the “Jewish Renaissance Movement in Poland,” delivers a speech calling on Jews to return to their homeland, Poland.

Dori Cohen Forster‘s work “After” traces Maya Deren and Alexander Hackenschmied into the time loop of their film “Meshes of the Afternoon.” In this classical film, a woman returns home and is trapped in a symbolic, enigmatic dream sequence in which time folds in on itself. Layers of images, objects, sound, text, and actions pile up on top of the silent film.
