Being (and feeling) good in the studio
Credits: 1.5
Elective course for Third and Fourth year
Ofir Yudilevitch
Ofir Yudilevitch specializes in capoeira and has been teaching capoeira and acrobatics for over a decade. From 2007 to 2009, he studied at the Workshop for the Training of Dancers in Haifa. After completing his studies, he worked as an independent dancer with various choreographers, including Yasmeen Godder, Arkadi Zaides, Yossi Berg and Oded Graf, Iris Erez, and others. In 2015, he created his first work, which was presented more than a hundred times worldwide.
His recent works include performances in public spaces that draw inspiration from physical practices that originate in the street, such as parkour, skateboarding, graffiti, and breakdance. Ofir's physical practice and teaching draw inspiration from a wide range of techniques and styles, including capoeira, release technique, handstand, and breakdance.
The dance studio is for me a place for creation as well as for practice. Throughout the years, I have been trying to improve in those two things. I repeatedly articulate for myself what kind of maker I want to be in the studio. What feels good to me and my collaborators, and eventually, what also does good for my creative process. I don’t believe in the concept of the tortured, self-destructive artist as a sustainable path. I want a studio filled with good vibes, magic, a collaborative atmosphere, and finding joy in the process. My practice routine is also a component in this attempt. I try to design exercise that continue to interest and to challenge me, that keep me in the state of joyful investigation during periods when I am not involved in the creation of a piece.
The course will be highly physical and will alternate between different techniques and movement styles that form together my creative universe. In the course I will share my own practises while being aware of the fact that students might have studios and approaches very different to mine. Together, we will try to convert those ideas to other fields: of text, theater and objects.
