Elective course for Second year

Nava Frenkel

Nava Frenkel is a performance artist and creator for the stage. She is a graduate of the School of Visual Theater and holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and philosophy. Her works are presented both in Israel and internationally, moving between the stage, gallery, and site-specific locations. She is the director of the School of Visual Theater.

During the course, we will try to explore the range of possible action that exists in theatrical events that are not-dramatic: what is the range of action of the performer and the spectator, and what are the ranges of stage action. We will read texts, get to know various artists, watch pieces, and mainly experiment with different practices for constructing a theatrical event, that does not stem from a play. We will do this through familiarizing ourselves with the various ways in which Performance, with its fluid definition that evades conceptual stability, seeps into different art forms during the 20th century, and transforms them. We will mainly focus on theater, but we will also look at dance, music, cinema, visual arts, and literature, as well as various theories, and try to understand their relevance in the creation of contemporary performances. The class will be conducted in English.
