A monumental gate carved from mahogany, cherry, and beech. Perhaps the gates of Heaven, perhaps the gates of Hell. At its center is the image of the “Hellmouth” — one of the most powerful symbols of medieval Christian iconography. The gaping maw marks the gates of Hell, swallowing a procession of human figures. Beneath it stretches a row of tormented figures buckling under the weight of a world that cannot be cast off. Surrounding the central image are depictions of the seven days of Creation. The work draws on medieval Christian art and the violence that accompanied this period, drawing a parallel with our own time.
