Prof. Daphna Ben-Shaul

Prof. Daphna Ben-Shaul is a senior lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts at Tel Aviv University, head of the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary programs unit of the arts, and head of the actor-creator-researcher track. Her research and teaching in theater, performance, and aesthetics primarily focus on civic and political issues, reflexive performance, empty performance, creative collectives, spectatorship and participation, spatial thinking, and site-dependent performances in Israel.

How does performance respond to the site in which it takes place and engage with its conditions, histories, and meanings? Artistic action and cultural reality are intrinsically and dynamically linked in spatial theory and performative expressions.

We will explore key concepts in spatial theory and site-specific performative culture. Emphasis will be placed on local trends that, in recent decades, have influenced the significance of the question “Where does a performance happen?” and its contemporary manifestations.

The focus will be on phenomena and case studies of urban emplacement, collective identity and memory, border sites, protest spaces, and zones of crisis. Participants will engage in dramaturgical or performative proposals for site-specific performance emplacement.
