Prey
Prey
A spark of gray light appears in the low sky. The performance is dormant, submerged in the realms of cheap horror. Its lust is the erosion of the conveyor belt, a celebration of apathy. The stage, like a frozen lake, swallows lifeless objects, characters drifting down a filthy canal. In flashes of murky pop, stuck in motion, is a pilot episode of a series about furniture in a generic catalog left behind at a train station. What you desire the most only awakens and kills you, awakens and kills you.

Western culture tends to value “high” art that appeals to the intellect and rationale, while dismissing art that exerts direct, uncontrollable manipulation over the body. In horror films, porn, and tear-jerking melodramas, the physiological tension is so powerful that it forces the spectator’s body to mimic the body appearing before them. The performance draws inspiration from these genres to explore the viewer’s involvement in what unfolds, born out of an interest in the involuntary response triggered in an audience that pays money to experience thrill and release.
